Overworld Map Generator

Note: This page will literally not do anything without Javascript enabled.

This page somewhat puts together the pieces that are all of the other generators on the site at this time. Below you should see two boxes. On the left it draws the map. On the right, you can set the radius.

How this generator works: This hex map generator creates a hexagonal map rather than a rectangular one. Tiles are drawn in rings extending from the center. It generates regions of like terrain somewhat similar to the way Minecraft "biomes" work. There is no concept of geographic latitude, which means that cold and hot terrains have nothing to do with going north or south. Indeed, if I were to incorporate latitudes to affect temperature, the maps would be a lot less varied since a typical map is similar to a county in size. That said, I would like to consider the option to create maps in the future that are climate-oriented.

All location names are randomly generated. Please be aware that any offensive word can theoretically be created by this process, though I have yet to see that happen.

Pre-generation settings

Radius
Note: The number of tiles scales up exponentially relative to the radius. A radius of 15 will generate over 700 tiles to explore, and since each hexagon has an intended diameter of 10 miles, that makes a map of 310 miles wide, easily enough for many adventures and possibly a full campaign. The lower end takes just a few seconds but the maximum radius can take several minutes to create a map.

Climate
Note: Mixed climate has randomized regions that completely ignore latitude-based climate. Cold has more Arctic areas and no Jungle, Desert, or Badlands. Hot has more Jungle, Desert, and Badlands, and no Arctic. Temperate has all types, but Arctic found only in top 1/3 of map and Jungle/Desert/Badlands found only in bottom 1/3. Temperate scales based on map size and is more realistic with large maps.
